Tourist Family’, a small-budget Tamil film, created a sensation in Tamil Nadu upon its release. Despite its modest scale, it not only achieved remarkable box office success but also won over audiences with rave reviews. It went on to become the biggest theatrical hit of the year in Tamil Nadu. The film even caught the attention of renowned filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, who praised it on social media—highlighting the film’s impact and quality.
Released in April, Tourist Family was made on a shoestring budget and has so far grossed ₹90 crores, with screenings continuing across India. The film stars Simran and Shashi Kumar in the lead roles, and marks the directorial debut of 25-year-old Abishan Jeevith, who also penned the story.
The plot follows a Sri Lankan family affected by the COVID crisis, who illegally migrate to India and live in isolation within a colony, avoiding any interaction with other residents. When a bomb unexpectedly detonates in the city, police investigations begin and suspicion falls on the family. The narrative unfolds around their struggle to survive and the harsh realities they face in a foreign land.
