The major topic in the Film industry in 2024 has been the continued dominance of South Indian cinema over its Northern counterpart, highlighted by the success of “Kalki 2898 AD.” A few months ago, the debate about the South’s dominance was prominent. This doesn’t imply that Hindi cinema is in decline, as movies like “KILL” have managed to uphold its reputation. However, some Bollywood films have faced significant criticism for their lack of content. They’ve been ridiculed. And with good reason. After all, Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil films accounted for 70%, or Rs 3,500 crore, of the top 10 box office receipts throughout all of India. The battle for OTP material is getting closer, but content from the four southern languages is still significant and on pace with Bollywood in terms of the quantity of films released and the weeks they control. When we examine the film industry as a whole, we can observe that, although South and Hindi cinema have been successful for varying amounts of time, Hindi cinema has been a phrasal language. However, it is also important to remember that Hindi films has often performed well. It’s also observed that some Bollywood films are still heavily trolled for their lack of content, often becoming the subject of ridicule. When considering cinema as a whole, we should view all films as Indian movies, rather than categorizing them as Hindi,Telugu, Kannada,Tamil movies.
The entire debate on north-south films becomes invalid when people don’t have
any problem with watching the movie in a dubbed way or with subtitles. Either the film industry will not work out if they constantly copy from the other and make their own version. Prakash Surya
