The Hollywood films from 1944 to 1954 included a number of grim stories that sprang from the social evils of the day. A noir film is regarded as a crime, despair, and sadness-filled movie. With origins in German Expressionist cinematography, almost all of these films have a subdued, black-and-white aesthetic. The effects of Art Deco (Scenography), American hard-boiled fiction, French poetic realism, and Italian neorealism were enormous. Noir is a term from French. As an alternative to mainstream cinema, a few production companies produced films based on noir storylines that, by happenstance, struck a chord with viewers and went on to become well-known as film noir. Life is filled with injustice, criminal activity, and underdog stories. Plots on subjects like a person’s selfishness were selected. An individual’s mindset, insensitivity to women, the addition of criminality, and arousing the audience’s curiosity. Among those who took these tales and turned them into novels were directors like Alfred Hitchcock, June Huston, Orson Welles, and Billy Wilder. Directed by June Houston, the first of these films was titled “The Maltese Falcon.” A healthy dose of restrained moral sensitivity and cynical realism throughout the script. By.Prakash Surya
