Lately, no one seems to understand why a movie becomes a hit or a flop. There’s now a sort of philosophical debate among audiences about what exactly makes a movie successful or not.
Take for instance the film “Court” starring the actor Darshi — it had innovative content, collected crores at the box office, and received great appreciation from the audience. On the other hand, another film starring the same actor, “Sarangapani Jatakam”, reportedly failed to even earn minimum collections, according to buzz in Film Nagar.
Even films made with massive budgets are falling flat in theatres. Surprisingly, some movies with no real substance are still managing to get decent openings. Meanwhile, small films with good content aren’t getting proper placement in theatres. Even OTT platforms are becoming overcrowded, leading to confusion among viewers.
Recently, some theatre lease agreements are being canceled, with those spaces going into the hands of big corporate players. In one way, the film industry seems to be in a crisis.
Several factors are contributing to this downturn — extreme summer heat, the non-stop IPL cricket matches, skyrocketing publicity costs, the easy availability of movies at home via OTT platforms, and many other issues.
For the industry to thrive again, movies with innovative content and solid storytelling need to be made. Many films are getting ruined at the pre-production stage itself, due to weak creative platforms. That issue needs to be addressed.
